Seminar date: Tuesday October 19, 2010

The Paul Revere parent seminar with Richard Cohen on Tuesday October 19th, 2010 was well attended. Parents presented a variety of concerns for raising middle school aged children. A common theme was how to deal with social issues, especially when your child is not being included. Two wonderful books that delve into this issue are The Blessing of a Skinned Knee by Wendy Mogel and Queen Bees and Wannabes by Rosalind Wiseman. Wendy Mogel’s book is a wonderful account of how to let your child have ‘difficult experiences’ in a safe and appropriate setting and then use them as teaching moments. Although the bi-line of the book claims to use Jewish Teachings, this book transcends any particular faith and is a must read for all parents. Wiseman’s book covers the tween/teen age experience for girls in middle and high school. A great book for the parents of boys is Raising Cain, Protecting the Emotional Life of Boys by Dan Kindlon and Michael Thompson.
